The Most Lethal Airplane Hunting the Seas
On a stormy night in June 1941, a Bristol Beaufort, the RAF’s first monoplane torpedo bomber, roared through black clouds on the kind of daring mission it was designed for, attacking the German heavy cruiser Lützow, recently spotted off the coast of Norway.
As it fought against the howling winds and turbulent skies, this Beaufort had somehow separated from the rest of the RAF’s 42 Squadron and was now flying solo. Flight Sergeant Ray Loveitt gripped the controls tightly. The 22-year-old pilot wasn’t normally superstitious, but on this Friday, the 13th, the odds felt particularly grim.

It was a bold leap into uncharted territory for aviation design. The Halifax’s blueprints scrapped the traditional two-engine configuration of British bombers in favor of four powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engines. This dramatic shift aimed to give the new aircraft unparalleled range, speed, altitude, and, most importantly, payload capacity. The ambitious Handley Page prototype took to the skies ...

In the wake of World War 2, Italy faced the immense challenge of rebuilding its shattered economy. Amidst this struggle and with limited funds, the Aermacchi aviation company developed the MB-326 jet trainer, a one-stop-shop for training all the Italian pilots of the late 20th century. Sleek and versatile, this low-wing, all-metal jet came with very simplified controls and avionics and featured...

In the peaceful solitude of the early hours of July 5th, 1955, a prototype of Britain’s latest interceptor, the Gloster Javelin, soared through the starry skies over southern England. The aircraft had been specially designed to fly at night and in all weather conditions, but it was a Javelin in name alone: not only did it travel at underwhelming speeds, but it was much bulkier than its contempo...

In early 1969, the dense jungles of Vietnam trembled under the dominion of the AC-47 gunship, affectionately known as Puff, the Magic Dragon. Its aged engines roared like a living beast of the air while its trio of miniguns promised swift justice from above, while its flares made an artificial day out of even the darkest of nights. This airborne guardian typically reigned supreme, its maneuvers...

While the Hornet had originally been conceived as a high-speed fighter for World War 2’s Pacific Theater, by the early 1950s, ...

On February 3, 1968, two of the Vietnam People’s Air Force top pilots, Pham Thanh Ngan and Nguyen Van Coc, took off on MIG-21s on their fourth interception mission of the day: a radar-detected pair of enemy aircraft, most likely light bombers. However, as the duo approached the Laotian border, MiG-21 pilot Ngan thought he spotted an EB‐66 ECM aircraft; a closer look revealed a much more valuabl...

Why hasn't the P-38 been in more movies?
Production, production, production is what won the war. Period.
How can a black cat be a pig (boat)?
The X15 wasn't a plane it was in fact a Rocket 🚀
Please is there any truth to what l have been told in that the Beaufort simply could not fly on one engine?
What I never see mentioned was the size of that aircraft. They were huge.
We don’t speak km in the U.S.!
That's one fugly bird.🤔
My Uncle flew a B-24 out of India during WWII. Their nickname for the B-24 was the Flying Porcupine due to the many heavy guns mounted about it's fuselage. He told me seeing Japanese fighter aircraft in the distance was not unusual but the Japanese pilots never attacked the B-24's due to the heavy protective armament they were equipped with. He was the last pilot of his command to fly a mission during WWII and actually landed after the war was over.
F-16 XL that had twice the number of weapons, range (which could be increased with external tanks) and twice the speed yet the US military weren’t interested?
Loose the jam!😐 it sux
P 38's in Europe don't get the credit they deserve.
SAAB is truly such a badass company <3
How many night fighters were shot down by the RAF bombers? I know this happened because my late father did on several occasions. The RAF bombers had had radar since 1940 and it was rapidly improved to proximity radar at the back to detect night fighters creeping up on them. Some thought it could give their position away but it was more likely to "jam" the night fighter's own radar.
My Dad was an Engineer (E.E.) with G.E. and was at Redstone with von Braun and the German Engineers in the early 50's and was transferred to The Cape in '56, so I grew up in Cocoa Beach around the space program. I had the X-15 model hanging from my bedroom ceiling as a kid and so wanted to be a fighter/test pilot. I had sky high SAT scores and was a very good athlete so was devastated to learn at ROTC Pilot selection that i was a DQ due to uncorrected vision that was not 20-20. So off to Engineering College I went (Georgia Tech, B.S.C.E., M.S.A.E.) and a 36 year career with America's largest defense contractor's Missile Systems and Aero companies where I just retired in 2018.
Die deutsche Übersetzung öhm netterversuch aber ganz seltsam Eine zero heißt plötzlich eine Null übersetztkorrekt aberder Name zerreißt der namezero
Lol, @1:07, the pilot required nerves of steel, showing a pilot franticly puffing on a smoke. Thanks for the video, interesting footage!
Why all that disturbing noise in the background?
Matching airfield east of Harlow Essex had Marauders , its been long derelict , but the tower is still there and some of the runways
So...the Russians built 33 Su-57 (10 prototypes, 22 serial)...let's see...oh...about twelve years. Now the Russians are touting the "New and Improved" Su-57. So...if the Su-57 took twelve years to produce 33 aircraft, then the Su-75 (the reverse arrangement of numbers) should be able to produce 33 aircraft in twenty-one years. Sounds about right.
Κι ο πιλότος τυχαία φορούσε τέτοια στολή 😂😂😂😂
"Secret fighter" like nobody knows what plane this is
шнауфер за одну ночь сбил 7 галифаксов.
So the twin engine plane in the thumbnail isn’t even in the video? 😡
RAF loo kers, brilliant content.
Good stor.
Good video, but I was perplexed with your pronunciation of the airfiefd in Fife , Scotland that the Beauforts took off from-then I realised you were talking about RAF Leuchars-it's pronounced "Lookers" not Looshars😀
Terrible...
Bats don't fly with the natural stability of Birds who combine a fuselage and tail with the wing
The Gina ! Wierd looking ?? I don't think so
Some great old footage there
I was born in Filton. Family worked on various planes during the war and I witnessed Concords maiden flight.
So then it wasnt the most important thing a helicopter ever did
The Roc didn't have a killing technique, unless it was its ability to ferry its hapless occupants to harm's way.
As an historian it always apalls how Westerners and East Asians too keep doing this very same mistake over and over. I find that Russian roughness makes many people be outright racist about them and their "lack of manners and sophistication and knowledge".
I don't know of any Su-24's downed in Angola. I don't think they ever had the aircraft. Impala did shoot down several Mi-24 and Mi-17 helicopters.
A coworker that actually had advanced training on P38’s by Tom Lamphier. He would advance further to B29’s and the atomic squadron. He watched a radar test using models of various aircraft. When the P38 model was put up, the radar technician started to complain about no model was present. The profile of the P38 was very stealthy, a mark of Kelly Johnson designs. Poor cockpit heating plagued the G version in northern Europe which was one of the reasons for their use in the Mediterranean
At 6:40 you list "other Allies" and in that list linclude Portugal which was an ally in WWI, not WWII
I did three cruises with VA~93 A7B aircraft. Never heard of the term before , it was an easy plane to work I was an AMS2.
Ecuadorian F-1s shot down 2 peruvian Su 22s in the 1995 Conflict, effectivley stopping all Peruvian Air incursions.
This was certainly lethal this Beaufort! Lethal for the flying crews!
when i watch these videos it reminds me of the quote "Never in the field of human conflict was so much been owed by so many to so few' Winston Churchill. That pilot was 22 guys 22! Kid out of high school.
GOOD AND GREAT CONTENT STUFF! YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR, THANK YOU SIR MORE, THAN YOUR THANK YOU. mr
An 2...slow and low..and that crop duster is tough old commie ba$+ard.
Why do you show American rockets rather than Soviet rockets? Not all viewers are that stupid. You showed an Atlas missile as well as a Mercury Redstone when talking about Soviet launches.
All that remains of Friday the thirteenth is its nose art at R.A.F. Cosford .
The most important contribution? Morale.
you know i have to say, what happened druing the ww1/ww2 france with your aircraft??! then in the 50's you could make a$$kiking aircraft..................................?
